00 hourly *Reporting Relationship: *Reports directly to the Steuben County Child Advocacy Coordinator *General Summary of Duties: *This is a full-time, paid position for the Institute for Human Services, Inc.
(IHS), a nonprofit organization located in Bath, NY.
This position is contracted to work with the Steuben County Department of Social Services.
The Victim’s Advocate Assistant will be responsible for providing services and support to children and their families wherein allegations of sexual or physical abuse are present in either a criminal or child protective investigation.
The Victim’s Advocate Assistant will assist victims in understanding the criminal justice system and their rights within the system.
The incumbent is responsible for providing support, keeping victims informed of scheduled court appearances and status of their case, and assisting victims in filing claims with New York State for any monetary loss as a result of the crime they were subject to.
Victim’s Advocate Assistant will be required to meet with victims in the office, police departments, Court, hospital settings.
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:* · Complete intake paperwork with the family, provide an overview of the Child Advocacy Center, and offer mental health counseling, medical evaluation, and victim services to all victims and, siblings, and non-offending caregivers.
· Provide information on all available services / programs offered by the CAC and outside agencies.
· Crisis intervention support for victims and their nonoffending caregivers.
· Provide emotional support and personal advocacy.
· Privileged confidential assurances to all families.
· Assistance in filing court paperwork and support through court appearances.
· Assistance in developing safety plans.
· Assistance in completing the necessary paperwork toreceive financial compensation from the New York State Office of Victim Services.
· Victims’ rights information is given to families informing them of legal, ethical and professional standards of practice.
· Referrals to counseling and forensic medical exams.
· Provide ongoing services, such as agency referrals, accompaniment to appointments, updates.
· Accompaniment / support during forensic medical exams and forensic interviews.
· Accompaniment/support during meetings with Law Enforcement and DA’s office.
· Accompaniment/support during court proceedings.
· Support Law Enforcement, Child Protective Services, and the District Attorney roles during the investigation and throughout the judicial process.
· Communicate with those first responders in the event of conflicts or confusion.
*Knowledge and Skills: *Comprehensive knowledge of the Office of Victim Services Program, Crime Victims' Rights, Community Services agencies, criminal justice system and court procedures, ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing, ability to assess needs of victims and make appropriate referrals, establish and maintain good working relationships with clients, staff and various agencies, work independently, relate well with persons under stress and emotional strain, ability to maintain records and prepare reports, ability to multitask, exercise discretion and sound judgement.
*Qualifications: *Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Human Services, Paralegal Studies, Sociology or Psychology or a closely related field.
*OR * Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associate degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Human Services, Paralegal Studies, Sociology or Psychology or a closely related field and four (2) years of counseling or casework experience in a recognized agency adhering to accepted standards in victim advocacy, probation, parole, social services, psychology or social work or related field.
